Ice & Snow Damage Repair

While Virginia is known for its mild winters, Northern Virginia does experience occasional ice and snow events that can cause surprising damage to roofs not designed for winter weather. The January 2018 'bomb cyclone' brought significant snow and ice to Northern Virginia, and winter storms in 2014 and 2010 caused widespread ice damage across the region. Because these events are rare, most Northern-Virginia roofs lack the cold-weather features common in northern states — making them more vulnerable when winter weather does strike.

Ice dams are the most common form of winter roof damage in our area. They form when heat escaping through the roof melts snow on the upper portions, and the meltwater refreezes at the colder eaves. This ice buildup creates a dam that traps water on the roof surface, forcing it under shingles and into the roof deck. Because Northern Virginia homes typically lack ice and water shield membrane at the eaves (it's not required by our building code), this water intrusion can cause significant damage.

Freeze-thaw cycles are another concern. When water gets into small cracks in flashing, around pipe boots, or under lifted shingles, it expands when it freezes — widening those openings and creating new pathways for water intrusion when it thaws. A single freeze-thaw cycle can turn a minor vulnerability into a significant leak.

Heavy snow loads, while rare, can also stress roof structures. Northern Virginia homes are engineered for wind loads, not snow loads, and an unusual accumulation of heavy, wet snow can exceed the design capacity of some roof structures — particularly on flat or low-slope sections.
