Rain chains (kusari doi) originated in Japan centuries ago and have become a popular accent on craftsman, modern-farmhouse, and Japanese-influenced homes across Northern Virginia. Instead of concealing rainwater inside a closed downspout, rain chains guide water visually along a series of cups or links, creating a gentle cascading effect during rainstorms.

In NoVA, rain chains fit well on covered porches, garden patios, and entryway alcoves where the visual pays off. Picture sitting on a covered porch during a summer afternoon shower, watching water cascade down a copper chain into a planted basin or splash basin below — it turns a routine drainage function into something pleasant.

We install rain chains in copper, brass, and aluminum, in both cup-style and link-style designs. Copper rain chains are the most popular choice in NoVA because they develop the same verdigris patina as copper gutters, creating a cohesive look on historic and traditional homes.

Important note: rain chains work best as accent pieces on covered porches, entryways, and garden areas where their look pays off. For high-volume drainage points, we recommend pairing rain chains with traditional downspouts on the rest of the home for adequate water management during NoVA's heavy summer thunderstorms.
